In-form Atalanta hold the aces
Juventus are the most successful club in Coppa Italia history, having won the title on 14 occasions, but they may struggle to add to the trophy cabinet in this year’s final with Atalanta at the Stadio Olimpico.
The Old Lady edged past Lazio 3-2 on aggregate in their semi-final although they were beaten 2-1 in the second leg at this venue, with Arkadiusz Milik’s 83rd-minute strike sending them through.
Atalanta, meanwhile, thrashed Fiorentina 4-1 in the second leg of their last-four encounter to turn the tie around after a 1-0 reverse away at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
And Atalanta, who also have a Europa League final with Bayer Leverkusen on the horizon, may be hitting form at the perfect time.
La Dea’s only defeat in their last ten matches in all competitions came against Liverpool in the Europa League, although that 1-0 home defeat was easy to take given they had won the opening leg 3-0 at Anfield.
Another 3-0 win over Marseille secured their place in the Europa League final and they have also won their last four Serie A matches to close in on Juve and Bologna in the battle for top four.
Old Lady going through turbulent time
While Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have been going stealthily about their business, the Old Lady are going through a tricky period.
Massimiliano Allegri’s troops have won only three of their last 17 matches in all competitions since the middle of January and they’ve drawn five consecutive matches in Serie A.
Four of the last five competitive meetings between these sides have ended all-square and, while that is again a plausible outcome, Atalanta may have the edge in the battle to lift the trophy.
Under 2.5 goals has landed in four of the last six rivalries and backing Atalanta to edge a nervy encounter 1-0 may be the best correct-score wager.
