Ross County remain in the box seat to retain their Premiership status after beating Raith Rovers 2-1 at their place on Thursday, but Sunday’s return clash in Dingwall is no foregone conclusion.
The Staggies seemed to be in full control of the first-leg at Stark’s Park when a penalty from Yan Dhanda and a Jack Baldwin header from Dhanda’s corner put them two goals ahead.
But Rovers refused to lie down and, after Sam Stanton’s close-range finish cut the deficit, they missed a gilt-edged opportunity to level the tie before the final whistle.
Murray’s men are dogged enough to compete
What Ian Murray’s side lacks in ability to compete with the Premiership club, they more than make up for in team spirit and that should mean the Staggies can never relax in this lunchtime clash at Global Energy Stadium.
Don Cowie’s side can be redoubtable performers when they are the underdogs too, such as when they speared Rangers’ title challenge with a 3-2 home win in April.
But the boot is on the other foot now and they are hardly worthy of support at odds-on prices for a game that they do not now need to win as a draw will ensure they beat the drop via the play-offs for a second year running. Both teams to score is the better play here as it has landed in seven of the Staggies’ last eight home games and Raith’s last three overall, including their 2-1 play-off semi win at Partick Thistle.
