Ajax host Union Berlin in the first leg of a super-exciting UEFA Europa League knockout round playoffs tie on Thursday evening at Johan Cruijff Arena.
Both teams will enter the game high on confidence which is why we are expecting a fantastic encounter in Dutch capital.
Ajax made a managerial change after a series of shockingly poor results at the start of the year. Their former full-back Johnny Heitinga took charge last month.
Heitinga has managed to completely shift the team’s fortunes around since taking over Alfred Schreuder. Ajax have won all four outings with him at the helm. The run includes the weekend’s 3-1 success against RKC Waalwijk.
The Amsterdam heavyweights are still in contention for the Eredivisie title, being just three points behind Feyenoord at the top of the standings.
However, we have to mention that Ajax’s defensive line looked horrendous in the UEFA Champions League group stage as the team conceded 16 goals in six outings against Liverpool, Napoli, and Rangers.
Ajax do have European experience and it will be very interesting to see whether it will make a big impact on Thursday against Union Berlin who have been the hottest team in Germany this winter.
Union Berlin have won 12 games in a row in all competitions, including the mid-season friendlies. They continued the superb spell of form on Saturday afternoon, beating RB Leipzig 1-2 on the road in the big top-half derby.
Urs Fischer’s men are only one point behind Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga standings.
