Defending champions United States will have the honor to open the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup on Saturday evening when they take on Jamaica in the first game of Group A at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois.
The hosts are among the main favorites to go all the way once again and repeat the CONCACAF Nations League title-defense quest.
The USMNT looked phenomenal at the recently played final four of the Nations League, beating Mexico and Canada on the way to the new title while keeping their net untouched in the process.
The problem for the hosts is that they will only have five players from the squad that cruised to the Nations League silverware as the head coach wants to give a chance to the rest of the players who want to make a name for themselves.
Even this US roster is very strong, though, featuring Jordan Morris, Brandon Vazquez, and Jesus Ferreira, three prolific scorers.
USA are 1.70 favorites to beat Jamaica on the opening day. The Reggae Boyz won’t enter this tournament in the highest of spirits after recent defeats in friendlies to Qatar and Jordan (1-2 each).
Icelandic manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has a talented attacking line on disposal, featuring Premier League stars Michail Antonio, Demarai Gray, and Leon Bailey.
His main problem appears at the back, though, because Jamaica currently have inexperienced defensive line. After all, the team conceded two or more goals in each of the last three games they played.
