Red Devils struggling
Manchester United finished fourth and won the EFL Cup last season but they have had a disappointing start to the season this time around, as punctuated by their 1-0 defeat to Newcastle on Saturday night.
The Red Devils were dominated for much of that game and have struggled against the top teams this season, losing twice to Newcastle, and being beaten by Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham and Brighton.
Erik Ten Hag’s side are also bottom of their Champions League group after winning just one of their five matches and suffering defeats at the hands of Galatasaray and Copenhagen.
The home team do have a number of injury concerns but also have failed to kick on from last season. Out of possession in particular has been an issue for Manchester United, with their pressing game easily played through by Newcastle at the weekend.
This team look a long way from challenging for the top four on current form and they face another tough assignment on Wednesday as they host Chelsea.
Blues on the up?
Chelsea had a tough start to the season, winning just one of their first six Premier League games. However since then they have won six of their last ten games in all competitions and picked up a pair of draws with Manchester City and Arsenal.
A 4-1 loss to Newcastle was exacerbated by a red card for Reece James but all in all the Blues have been playing good football recently and showed that in a 3-2 win over a tricky Brighton outfit on Sunday.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side have rediscovered their goalscoring touch, netting 12 times in their last four matches, and they can put their attacking talents to good use against a leaky Red Devils backline.
Hosts struggling against quality opposition
Manchester United are hard to trust on current form and their injury issues make them easier to pass over. Key players such as Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes are struggling to show their best and their makeshift defence is also a problem.
To add to that, Erik Ten Hag’s men have not been good against top-level opposition this season and Chelsea are a team on the up.
Pochettino seems to be getting his team to gel finally and some of his young players have stepped up to the plate in recent weeks.
The Blues are fancied to further add to the woes of Ten Hag and the Red Devils by inflicting their fourth Premier League home loss of the season on the hosts.
Both teams have scored in five of Chelsea’s last seven away games in the league so for correct score backers it’s worth siding with a 2-1 win for the visitors.
