Burnley taking on Luton may not be a Premier League fixture that catches the eye, but the stakes could hardly be higher when the two strugglers meet at Turf Moor on Friday.
The Clarets were certainly expected to do a lot better after steaming their way to Championship glory last season and their home form has been the greatest cause for concern as a 5-0 victory over bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United has been the only game they have not lost on their own patch.
A tally of 11 points from their opening 20 games can only be viewed as a disappointment, but there has been enough to take from their last few performances to suggest they will be positive for this visit from the Hatters.
They fell to a 3-2 defeat at Aston Villa after conceding a late penalty and that was when they had to play the last half an hour with ten men and manager Vincent Kompany will have been heartened by the quality of their defending in a 1-0 FA Cup defeat at Tottenham.
The Clarets undoubtedly have to improve in that respect, having conceded at least twice in eight of their ten home matches, and by going on the front foot there is a decent chance plenty of opportunities being created at both ends, which makes over 2.5 goals an attractive bet.
Hatters are unlikely to hold back
Luton have four more points than their fellow promotees and Rob Edwards’s outfit appear to be making a bold bid to extend their stay back in the top flight beyond a solitary season.
The Hatters have been particularly impressive at home when standing up to some of the Premier League’s big boys as they have beaten Newcastle, drawn with Liverpool, who needed a late equaliser to grab a point and they also ran Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester City relatively close at Kenilworth Road.
And there have been signs of life on the road as well with a key 3-2 victory at Sheffield United so they will believe that three points at Turf Moor is well within their compass.
The key feature is that all but two of their away games have featured fewer than three goals so that is another reason to get with the overs, and those looking for a correct-score punt may lean towards a 2-2 draw between two teams who are difficult to split.
