Colombia will be delighted with the way they have progressed through the group stage at the Copa America and they should be confident about booking a semi-final spot at Panama’s expense.
The South American outfit can be satisfied with the 1-1 draw they posted with Brazil to ensure they came out on top of Group D following victories over Panama and Costa Rica, and they have managed to extend their unbeaten run to 26 matches.
They will have to cope without the suspended Jefferson Lerma for Saturday’s game against Panama, but that should not be an insurmountable handicap against a team who finished runners-up in their section and will have been pleased to qualify for the knockout stage in only their second Copa.
Step up could be too much for Panama
Panama caused a surprise when they posted a 2-1 win over hosts USA, but they played for 70 minutes of that game against ten man and still needed a goal from Jose Fajardo seven minutes from time to get over the line at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Atlanta.
That result came after they were seen off 3-1 by Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay in their opening match, which does not bode well for a strong performance against a team who are third in South American World Cup qualifying and represent a step up.
With just two of Colombia’s last eight games featuring fewer than three goals, this could be an opportunity for Los Cafeteros to cut loose, so a 3-1 win for Nestor Lorenzo’s side looks a sensible correct-score option.
