France opened their bid for a home Gold medal with a 3-0 win over USA and a win over Guinea on Saturday would probably be enough to see them seal a quarter-final spot with a game to spare.
Thierry Henry’s side were perhaps flattered by the scoreline in their win over the Americans but they were certainly deserving winners.
Guinea suffered a shock loss to New Zealand and now face the prospect of having to get results from their games against the French and the Americans if they are to stand a chance of challenging for the medals.
Backing France to cover a -1 handicap looks a good starting point here as they have an exceptional attacking line up – with Bayern Munich summer buy Michael Olise and overage players Alexandre Lacazette and Jean Phillippe-Mateta expected to start.
France are unbeaten in 2024 with four wins and two draws, and their last three wins have all been by at least three goals.
Guinea were perhaps unlucky not to get anything from their opener against New Zealand but now they are in desperate need of points and have to go on the attack against the hosts. That could well work in France’s favour and if they are able to get an early goal it could open the floodgates so a 4-0 win for Henry’s men is the correct score pick.
Olise was probably France’s standout performer against the USA with a goals and an assist and he can add to his haul against Guinea. The former Crystal Palace man now has four goals in his last three games for his country and he looks the best bet for an anytime goal.
