Kilmarnock’s European dreams look set to be shattered by FC Copenhagen when the Danish club take a 2-0 first-leg advantage to Rugby Park for their Europa Conference League qualifying decider.
Killie were on course for a solid away draw at Parken Stadium until a controversial penalty award after VAR intervened in the 77th minute. Even then, a 1-0 reverse would not have been a bad result, but Rasmus Falk shinned a volley into the top corner in the game’s last action to make it tougher for the Premiership club to mount a comeback.
Derek McInnes’ side are not in great form and have lost five of their last eight matches in normal time and another in extra time. They have scored only one goal in the last 480 minutes of football and look unlikely to trouble a Copenhagen side well used to performing at a higher level.
Icelandic ace a danger on the break
Jacob Neestrup’s men reached the Champions League’s round of 16 last season and were not disgraced in two clashes against the then reigning champions Manchester City.
Teenage striker Orri Oskarsson, who backheeled an audacious assist to Mohamed Elyounoussi at the Etihad Stadium last March, is in fine form again with six goals in his last nine appearances.
The Icelandic starlet found it tough going in the first leg against a packed Kilmarnock defence deployed in a low block, but with McInnes’ side forced to open the game out at home, his ability to finish off counter attacks could earn him a goal in an away win.
