- Everton are winless in 13 away games, losing eight times in that run
- Aston Villa have lost only two of their last 11 home matches and won four of their last six meetings with the Toffees at Villa Park
- The Villans have come seven home games without a clean sheet and both teams to score has landed in four of Everton’s last six away matches
Toffees’ troubles to continue in Birmingham
The international break could not have come at a better time for Everton. The Toffees are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table after following up consecutive losses to nil with a capitulation against Bournemouth.
Everton were leading the Cherries 2-0 until the 87th minute, only to throw away their advantage in record-breaking fashion to lose 3-2. Sean Dyche will be looking for a reaction following that humiliating result, but even a week off to recover is unlikely to be enough to see them beat Aston Villa on Saturday.
The Villans have won four of their last six home matches against the Toffees and have lost only two of their last 11 matches at Villa Park, suggesting the Champions League side are unlikely to give up any points to the Premier League’s basement boys.
Hosts’ hopes of ending clean sheet drought may be dashed
Not only are Villa imperious at home, the Toffees are not exactly strong on their travels either, with their recent 4-0 loss at Spurs extending their winless run on the road to 13 matches – a sequence which has seen them lose eight times.
However, while even a single point is unlikely for Everton, a goal is not beyond their reach, especially as Villa and Unai Emery may have one eye on Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Young Boys.
While the final ten minutes of the Toffees’ loss to Bournemouth were a disaster, they did look dangerous going forward in that defeat – an improvement on their opening two games.
The Toffees racked up 18 shots to the Cherries’ 17 and their goals were well taken, suggesting they may have enough to net in defeat at Villa Park, where the hosts have now gone seven games without a clean sheet.
Forwards to come to the fore at Villa Park
Everton scored at the Emirates and St James’ Park – two notoriously hard places to go – towards the end of last season and are capable of unsettling stronger sides, as shown when beating Villa in the League Cup last term.
Although, while the Toffees’ attacking play was much-improved against Bournemouth, it is still hard to have faith in attackers as inconsistent as Jack Harrison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to net more than once against the Villans.
Villa, in contrast, have Ollie Watkins, Jhon Duran, Leon Bailey and Morgan Rogers to call upon and it would be no surprise to see them net three against a side who have shipped ten in three league games this term, making 3-1 an appealing correct-score bet.
