Both Everton and Southampton will be desperate to breed some confidence with a win in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup third-round clash, but the Toffees look more likely to get the job done.
Because while tossing away a couple of two-goal leads in the Premier League has left Everton supporters bemused and their rival fans in stitches, Sean Dyche’s side have looked cohesive and potent in attack.
Everton were clearly the better side against Bournemouth in last month’s dramatic 3-2 home turnaround where they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Dyche’s substitutions were questionable and one or two players visibly tired as the Cherries grew in confidence in a crazy final few minutes.
Saints lack the firepower to trouble Toffees
But, overall the performance levels were good – as they were at Villa Park where only a Jhon Duran wondergoal cost them a point, which the width of a crossbar denied them re-taking in the closing moments. Southampton fans can only dream of such drama in their matches, which have conclusively demonstrated that they do not have enough firepower to pick up regular points in the Premier League.
Russell Martin’s side fluffed their chance to put Manchester United under more pressure on Saturday and duly collapsed when they eventually fell behind, belying some brittle confidence in their ranks.
Everton with Goodison Park’s backing, should get the result their performances have perhaps deserved in the past fortnight with Dyche’s team intent on bolting the back door once they get ahead this time around.
