Goals from Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer extended Newcastle’s winless streak in the Premier League to five games and the Magpies have especially struggled in front of goal.
Alexander Isak’s consolation goal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday was Newcastle’s first non-penalty goal in more than seven hours of football and they have recently been shut out by the likes of Everton and Brighton.
It leaves Eddie Howe’s men in the mid-table positions and, as much as a cup run would do them the world of good, the same applies to Chelsea.
Blues eager to make their mark in EFL Cup
The Blues are making excellent progress under Enzo Maresca, who is getting a tune out of Jackson and Palmer among others, and winning a competition like the EFL Cup could be the catalyst for them to go to the next level.
They have greater squad depth than Newcastle, so could be a touch sharper going into this midweek contest, and the formbook points to a win for the visitors.
