Those results and performances should have boosted United’s confidence ahead of this home clash with bottom of the table Southampton, while Thursday’s hosts also have an impressive recent record when facing the Saints, as they are unbeaten in the last 16 meetings between the two sides.

Cup win unlikely to spark Southampton upturn
