Real Madrid haven’t quite clicked with the new Champions League format, as they sit 20th in the 36-team table. However, they can boost their hopes of a strong finish to the League Phase when they host Salzburg on Wednesday night.
The Austrian side are struggling this term, sitting fifth in the Bundesliga. They’ve also had a tough time in Europe, losing five of their six games to nil. Four of those defeats have been by a three-goal margin or greater, having been thumped by Bayer Leverkusen and PSG in their previous two games in the Champions League.
The new format is also working against Salzburg, as they return to European action having gone over a month without featuring in a competitive game. Their domestic league is on hold until February and Salzburg have lost 6-0 to Bayern Munich and 3-2 to Midtjylland in friendlies to start off 2025.
Real have scored three or more goals in eight of their previous 11 games and they can coast by a rusty side who have struggled in Europe this term.
