Two of the most physical clubs in the Championship clash at Deepdale on Saturday when in-form Lancashire rivals Preston and Burnley will look to gain the upper hand. Preston have committed the most fouls in the division and their rugged reputation appears well-earned.
Paul Heckingbottom’s side do appear to have turned the corner results-wise now too with Tuesday’s 1-0 win at Norwich bringing their tally of points earned in the last four games to nine.
The ex-Sheffield United boss was full of praise for his side’s display, saying they should have taken more of their chances but his side did appear to lose midfielder Duane Holmes to a possible leg break.
Defences likely to be on top at Deepdale
Burnley played 24 hours later and won equally impressively against Hull. Unbeaten in 19 Championship matches and with 16 clean sheets in that run, they are still somehow outside of the automatic promotion positions.
That means they can’t afford to drop any points at Deepdale, where they have won on two of their last three visits. Preston have not lost any of their last eight at home, though, so a draw is probably the most likely result.
If one of the sides can edge ahead then each team’s recent defensive record suggests that they can close the game out with under 1.5 goals looking like the standout bet for this contest.
