One of the less glamorous fixtures in the Championship might not yield many goals when Millwall entertain relegation-threatened Stoke at the Den on Saturday. The two clubs were in action in midweek when the mid-table Lions lost at Leeds and Stoke earned a much-needed three points at home to Blackburn.
Neither of those results was a shock because Millwall’s FA Cup win at Elland Road last month came against a weakened Whites lineup with bigger priorities. Meanwhile, Stoke were facing a Rovers team in a confused state after a recent change of manager and with terrible away form.
The lack of goals or even decent opportunities in each game was more of a surprise as Leeds are on course to tally over 90 goals this season and four of Stoke’s previous five games had featured at least four strikes.
Millwall defended pretty well in the main and restricted the table-toppers to only two shots on target, albeit they contributed to their downfall with a third-minute own goal. But they never looked like scoring despite knowing they had to for 87-plus minutes.
The goal markets suggest this will be a low-scoring affair too with not much more than 1/2 on offer for under 2.5 goals in the game. It looks the safest play around, however, because Millwall are the joint-lowest home scorers in the division and only three clubs have scored fewer away goals in the Championship than the Potters.
Viktor Johansson is also in excellent form, so if Millwall do suddenly burst into life, Mark Robins can rely on his goalkeeper to save the day – as he did with two excellent saves to preserve the win against Blackburn. Back a repeat of the 1-1 draw in the Potteries earlier this season because Stoke have drawn two of their last seven away league games and were seconds away from another stalemate at Coventry last week.
