- Slovakia won four of their six matches in the League Phase
- Slovenia’s only two wins during the League Phase came against Kazakhstan
- The pair’s last two meetings have finished level
Slovakia can stand firm against Slovenia
The 2024-25 UEFA Nations League play-offs get underway this week and Slovakia will get the chance to return to League B for the first time since 2021 thanks to a strong League Phase campaign.
Francesco Calzona’s side gave a good account of themselves in Group C1c, winning four and losing just one of their six games to finish just two points behind a Sweden team led by superstars Alexander Isak, Dejan Kulusevski and Viktor Gyokeres.
Their reward for such a strong showing in the League Phase is a play-off showdown with Slovenia and, with the first leg taking place in Bratislava, they are favourites to take the initiative in the tie.
Draw specialists set for another stalemate
However, while Slovakia have been tough to beat since Calzona’s appointment – they have lost just seven of his 28 matches in charge – Slovenia are a supremely talented side, even if their League Phase campaign was a disappointment.
Matjaz Kek’s side could only muster up wins against Kazakhstan in Group B3 but with Benjamin Sesko, scorer of five goals in the League Phase, leading the line they will always have a chance of securing a positive result.
Seven of Slovenia’s last 11 matches have been level after 90 minutes – that run includes matches against England and Portugal – and despite their poor form, they can be expected to keep things level before the second leg in Ljubljana.
