After brutally knocking out Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés last week, Manchester United will now host the Basque team at Old Trafford on Thursday. United holds a three-goal advantage, but the Los Leones camp surely still believes that the tie can be revived. The Europa League final will be held at San Mamés, giving Ernesto Valverde's squad extra motivation.
For Rúben Amorim's United, winning the Europa League would undoubtedly bring some much-needed relief. There’s no chance of qualifying for the Champions League through the Premier League next season, but lifting the trophy in Bilbao at the end of the month would also mean UCL football next autumn. Last week already clearly demonstrated that United, under Amorim, is heading in the right direction in terms of gameplay.
There are no significant changes in the home team’s health situation compared to last week. Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee, Tobias Collyer, Lisandro Martínez, Diogo Dalot, and Ayden Heaven remain sidelined.
Last week was, of course, devastating for Athletic, as no one expected the tie to be almost over after the home game. Dani Vivian’s red card in the first half severely ruined the Basques’ match, but their finishing also left much to be desired. With the chances created, Valverde’s men should have at least once put the ball in the back of the net. There’s plenty to improve on for Thursday in this regard as well.
