Hapless Hammers
- Manchester United are without a win in six league matches
- West Ham are doing even worse, however, failing to win any of their last eight
- Two of United’s last three at Old Trafford and four of the Hammers’ last seven matches finished level
Europa League success may not be enough to fix poor league results
In a major surprise, Manchester United made light work of Athletic Bilbao – a side sitting fourth in La Liga, 11 spots higher than United’s position in the Premier League – in their Europa League semi-final, routing their Spanish opponents 7-1 on aggregate to set up a showdown with Tottenham in the final, which ironically takes place in Bilbao.
Their 4-1 victory in the second leg on Thursday means there will be a buoyant mood at Old Trafford on Sunday, something which has been a rarity in recent seasons given their domestic struggles.
Of course, those domestic struggles have remained this season, too, with the Red Devils winning just nine Premier League games, and with the Europa League now their priority, it is hard to know what level of performance we will get on Sunday.
Ruben Amorim has lost half of his 24 league matches since taking over at United and last week’s 4-3 defeat at Brentford made it six Premier League games without a victory.
Out-of-form foes fancied to share the points
That is relegation form and the Red Devils will be extremely grateful that Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton were simply nowhere near Premier League standard – and United aren’t the only ones thankful for that.
West Ham are sitting 17th and without a win in eight, meaning Sunday’s clash between the Red Devils and Hammers at Old Trafford is lucky to be regarded as a relegation six-pointer.
The Hammers are equally as hard to have faith in as United and Graham Potter’s days at the helm are looking increasingly numbered, with some fans already growing tired of his tactics and personality already.
However, with their hosts distracted by their European final and likely to rest players following Thursday’s victory, Potter has a great opportunity to get the fans back on side by taking the game to United, and West Ham can earn a point as a result.
Hapless Hammers heading for another draw
An away win will tempt some punters but Potter was in this boat against Tottenham last week and his side produced a drab and disappointing display, suggesting siding with the draw seems a better play for Sunday’s clash.
Four of the Hammers’ last seven matches and two of United’s last three at Old Trafford finished level and the stalemate appeals again.
Three of West Ham’s draws in that run have finished 1-1, including last week’s stalemate with Spurs, and that is the standout scoreline bet again, with the Hammers’ influential captain Jarrod Bowen, who they would arguably have been relegated without, fancied to get their goal.
