- Newcastle have won their last six home league games.
- Everton have won just two of their last six away.
- Everton have scored in six of their last eight away fixtures.
Newcastle looking to finish the job
Newcastle know a victory over Everton on the final day of the Premier League season will be enough to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.
The Magpies sit third with 66 points, level with Chelsea and Aston Villa below them but with a significantly better goal difference than the latter. Nottingham Forest are just a point further back but the fact they play Chelsea at the City Ground on Sunday works in Newcastle’s favour in a season where a top five finish is good enough for a place at Europe’s top table.
Everton have nothing left to play for as they will end the season in 13th spot irrespective of their result on Sunday, but they have put together a three-game unbeaten run ahead of this game and could make a game of this.
Handicaps or goals the options
Newcastle have shown their ability to get over the line this season when it matters most after landing the EFL Cup and although they may have a few nerves going into Sunday’s they should be able to get the result they need.
Eddie Howe’s men have won their last six home league games and have been strong at St James’ Park all season, with 12 wins in 18 games so far in the Premier League (D2, L4).
Newcastle have won each of their last four home games by at least two goals so the handicap markets are of interest, but the better angle could be focusing on the goals markets.
Both teams to score seems reasonable as Everton have hit a bit of form and have only failed to score in three of their last 14 games. However, at a bigger price taking a chance on over 3.5 goals is the preferred option here.
Newcastle have scored multiple goals in each of their last six home games in the Premier League and three of those have produced at least four goals in total. Everton are also expected to contribute to the total, and together these teams can combine for at least four goals in total.
Tonali an outside scoring contender
A 4-1 win for Newcastle is the correct score prediction here as they are the only teams with anything left to play for and a goal may be as good as it gets for Everton. The Merseyside outfit have been excellent defensively recently and they haven’t conceded more than twice in any game since December, but with the summer in sight they may ease off here after ensuring they ended their stay at Goodison Park with a victory last weekend.
Newcastle’s top scorer Alexander Isak is a doubt after missing the defeat to Arsenal last weekend with a groin injury. If he does play, the Swedish forward is clearly the best anytime scorer bet as he has 23 goals for the season in this competition and will be on spot kick duties.
As a few home goals are expected, it could be worth looking further down the betting and Sandro Tonali is an interesting option. The Italian has just four league goals to his name this term but three of those have come in his last nine games – and all of those three strikes have come at St James’ Park.
