Earthquakes can add to St Louis struggles
St Louis take on San Jose Earthquakes in MLS on Saturday as the home side look to bring an end to a 12-game winless run in the league.
This will be the first game for the hosts since Olof Mellberg was axed and we may see some reaction from the players, but given their form it still makes sense to back San Jose to come away with maximum points.
The Earthquakes have missed out on the Playoffs in each of the last four seasons, aside from an appearance in the Wild Card round in 2023, but they have an excellent chance to end that run this year as they sit in seventh place in the West.
The visitors are on an eight-game unbeaten streak across all competitions and they’ve been in good form on their travels with seven points from the last available nine on the road, while St Louis have three defeats and no wins in their last five MLS home games.
As underdogs, the in-form visitors look worth backing here despite the uncertainty over how St Louis will respond to the dismissal of Mellberg.
A 1-0 win for San Jose is the correct score pick as they have gone three games without conceding on the road – and a lack of attacking threat has been one of St Louis’ main problems as they have managed just 11 goals in 15 MLS games.
San Jose have the best attack in the West with 33 goals scored but most of those goals have come in home games – they’ve hit eight goals in seven trips – and top scorer Cristian Arango will probably miss out again due to a hamstring issue.
